August in Highlands Ranch reads like a wind-down on paper. The Thursday concert series at Highland Heritage wraps July 30, the pool crowd starts thinning, and the trails go quiet by mid-morning. Look at the actual calendar and a different picture emerges. The Ranch is running two parallel event tracks this month, and they converge on a single Saturday most residents haven't put on the fridge yet.
That Saturday is August 22, and it is not another free concert. It is the closing act of a milestone summer, with a piece of programming the community has not staged before.
The August anchor most residents haven't clocked
The 2026 Summer Sunset Concert lands Saturday, August 22 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Civic Green Park at 9370 Ridgeline Blvd, headlined by Ninety2K, a Denver 90s and 2000s rock cover band, and admission is free. That alone would be a decent Saturday. What makes it worth blocking off is what happens after the music.
The concert is followed by a drone show as part of the America 250 / Colorado 150 initiative, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and Colorado's 150th year of statehood. Douglas County drone shows have quietly replaced fireworks in a lot of Front Range programming this year, and this one is the HRCA's signature closer for a dual-anniversary summer that will not repeat.
Two practical notes before you plan around it. At Civic Green Park for the Aug 22 Summer Sunset Concert, dogs are not allowed in the park. And unlike the Thursday series at Highland Heritage, Ridgeline Blvd traffic does not have the same familiar overflow pattern, so getting there early to claim lawn space matters more than usual.

The Ice Cream Social is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026, featuring all-you-can-eat ice cream treats to raise money for a local nonprofit, music by the Highlands Ranch Concert Band, food trucks, and vehicle and safety demonstrations by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and South Metro Fire and Rescue. If you have kids who peaked on the concert-series routine by mid-July, this one resets the summer for them.
The weeknight fill locals actually use
The Thursday concerts get most of the press, but by August a lot of the local rhythm has shifted south to the Backcountry. The Backcountry Wilderness Area is an 8,200-acre HRCA-managed open space south of Highlands Ranch, and the Base Camp at 6005 Ron King Trail hosts the public programming, including Nature Night Out on Friday evenings at 5:30 p.m. and outdoor movies at the Base Camp on Saturday nights.
The Friday cadence is the one worth building around. Nature Night Out is short enough to fit after work and casual enough that no one is precious about what the kids are wearing. The Saturday movie lineup earlier in the summer included titles like The Goonies, The Wild Robot, and The Sandlot, and the August slate follows the same tone.
The other underused weeknight anchor is the Westridge Friday Night Market, which fills the gap between the last Thursday concert on July 30 and the Aug 22 Sunset Concert. It is a lower-key evening. You walk over, you eat, you go home. That is the point.
Where dinner fits before or after
The food picture in Highlands Ranch changed materially this spring, and if you have been on the same rotation for three years you have missed at least two things worth working into your August grid.
The most consequential relaunch is on the older end of the map. A Highlands Ranch staple since long before most of the neighborhood's restaurants existed, Old Blinking Light closed January 1 for renovations and a change in ownership, and it's back open with a refreshed space, updated menu, and an elevated cocktail program. This is the pre-Sunset Concert reservation if you want a real dinner before walking into Civic Green Park.
The newer arrivals sit on the S University corridor and the Promenade:
- Egg Harbor Cafe. The Highlands Ranch Egg Harbor Cafe is the brand's first Colorado location, at 9579 S University Blvd, Lot 3B, open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., no reservations. This is the post-Saturday-movie breakfast, not a dinner option.
- Toastique. The Freedmans' first store at the Highlands Ranch location in the Denver metro area is now open, and it works as a walkable coffee-and-toast stop for a Nature Night Out afternoon that runs long.
- Graze Craze. Graze Craze is under construction at 2670 East County Line Rd, Suite I in Highlands Ranch's Promenade Shopping Center, with local franchisee Sara Clay set to oversee the location. Not a dine-in spot. This is the "we are hosting a Sunset Concert lawn crew" order.
The category that still gets ordered by muscle memory is pizza and pub food, and that is fine. The point is not to overhaul your Friday night. It is to notice that two of the four new food additions in Highlands Ranch this year are breakfast-and-lunch concepts, which means the summer weekend structure has quietly shifted toward morning-out, evening-in.
A working August week, built from the grid
If you want a template to steal, this is the one that respects both tracks without overbooking.
- Monday: Trail evening in the Backcountry, home by dusk.
- Wednesday, Aug 5: Ice Cream Social at the Mansion. Bring the kids for the fire and sheriff demos.
- Friday: Nature Night Out at Base Camp at 5:30, then Westridge Friday Night Market on the way home.
- Saturday: Movie at Base Camp. Breakfast the next morning at Egg Harbor before the crowd finds it.
- Saturday, Aug 22: Old Blinking Light at 5:00, walk into Civic Green Park by 6:15, Ninety2K, then the drone show. Skip driving if you can.
That is one big weekend, two family anchors, and two low-lift evenings, without a single Fiddler's Green ticket or a drive into downtown.
What holds for September
The Ranch does not stop on Aug 22. It resets. Three notable September events at HR venues include Highlands Ranch Western Fest at the Mansion on Saturday, September 12, the Fall Craft Fair at Eastridge Rec Center the same day, and Fête des Fables Gala 2026: Snow White at the Highlands Ranch Mansion on Friday, September 25. The running crowd is already looking further out: the 18th Annual Backcountry Wilderness Half Marathon returns to Highlands Ranch on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., winding through the Douglas County East/West Trail and the scenic Highlands Ranch Backcountry Wilderness Area.
None of that is a reason to skip August. It is a reason to not treat August 22 as optional. The Sunset Concert with a milestone-year drone show is the kind of evening that gets referenced later as "remember when they did the drone show at Civic Green," and the residents standing on the lawn are the ones who noticed it was on the calendar in the first place.
